Ghanaian rapper Bashir Annan known in music circles as Gambo is of the opinion that to break boundaries, Ghanaian musicians need to use English in their songs.
Responding to claims that moat Ghanaians don’t appreciate rap done in English, he told ghanaweekend.com that English is taught in Ghanaian schools, so he does not understand why people say that.
“I no dey understand that [when people say Ghanaians don’t understand English rap], but we go school. Ebe English we dey learn for there. Ghanaians always want artistes to go international. How do we go international without speaking English? And when they do Twi too, they say you can’t take Twi outside Ghana. So what are we supposed to do?”, he asked.
According to him, he believes in working on one’s craft, doing what they want, and paying attention to their fans.
“At the end of the day, it is your fans that make you who you are. Anybody wey dey listen you, wey dey give you streams, wey dey post your music, wey dey support you, ebe dem go determine where you go be in the next 5 or 10 years,” he added.
He further noted that one thing that has become a challenge for him is the perception that he is disrespectful.
“For now ebe that tag: Gambo dey worry, Gambo no dey pet, Gambo dey hold block, that be what dey worry me,” he said.
The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards ‘Unsung’ artiste of the year says he is getting ready to release an album that will feature some internationally-acclaimed musicians.
So far he has songs like ‘Drip’, ‘We Move’, and ‘Settle.’
