Ghanaian gospel musician Diana Hamilton has devised a strategy for making her music, and it appears it is working perfectly for her.
The gospel diva who recently released ‘My Meditations’ told Kwame Dadzie in an interview on Ghana Weekend TV that a lot more people relate to her songs better since she started blending Twi and English in her lyrics.
She said even though she had always tried to sneak some English words into her Twi songs, it wasn’t until ‘Work in Progress’ that she decided to fully experiment with that style.
“Prior to going solo, I was always doing both English and Twi. I could do purely English songs, and purely Twi songs due to what I had been exposed to. But when I was coming out with my first album, I remember my executive producer King David told me if I wanted to do Twi, it should be purely Twi. If I wanted to do English, it must be purely English,” she noted.
Diana Hamilton said she had a stint with multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah who encouraged her to blend English and Twi languages any time she felt like doing it.

Asked how that has benefited her, she suggested that it’s helped her to reach different types of audiences.
“I just recently went to the BBC. I had an interview on the BBC. And when I was having a chat with Paula, the lady that interviewed me, she said ‘your blend makes your craft relatable and understandable by all’. That’s what she said. She said ‘is it because you blend? Because for me, even if I don’t read the subtitles, I am able to know what you are talking about.’ And so it helped, and why change a winning team?” she noted.
She, however, noted that her style might not work for every artiste because Rebecca Malope sings in her native language and still gets a lot of people across the world to love her music.
Diana’s latest song, ‘My Meditations’, is available on all online music stores.
