My first encounter with Josh Blakk was during a performance for Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, and I immediately realised there was something special about him because his style and professionalism were standard throughout working with him for this performance in question where he played the guitar and sang at the same time.
For Josh Blakk, music is more than just sound—it is a language, a bridge between experiences, emotions, and storytelling. The artist and instrumentalist has spent 19 years refining his craft, creating what he describes as high soul music, a genre that seamlessly fuses the rhythmic depth of highlife with the emotive power of soul.
His musical journey began in 2006, during his secondary school days, when the vision of his sound first took shape. Since then, he has drawn inspiration from personal experiences and the world around him. “Music is just a form of communication, delivering messages through melodies,” he says. “Most of these messages are from my personal experiences and those of many others.”
A Free-Flowing Creative Process
For Blakk, creativity does not follow a rigid formula. His songwriting process is fluid—sometimes structured, sometimes spontaneous. “There are times I write without any melody in mind,” he explains. “Other times, I dream of a song and bring it back from dreamland.” Some of his most celebrated songs were never written down before recording. “I just get behind the mic and sing what comes to my mind,” he adds.
A Self-Taught Multi-Instrumentalist
Beyond his vocal abilities, Blakk is also a self-taught instrumentalist. While his focus today is primarily on the guitar and piano, he has played an array of instruments over the years, including the saxophone, bass guitar, and other wind instruments. His guitar, in particular, has become a defining element of his sound. “It plays a major role in my music,” he says.
The Sound of O.N.E: A Celebration of Love
Blakk’s latest project, O.N.E., was crafted to strike a balance between acoustic simplicity and full production. At its core, the album carries a universal message: love is the greatest. “That was the whole idea behind O.N.E.” he says.
The album’s creation was not without its challenges, with mixing and mastering proving to be the toughest decision. “I’m happy with my choice because he did such a wonderful job,” he reflects. The album also featured collaborations with talented guest artists, whom Blakk describes as “pure joy” to work with.
Amapiano and Accolades
Among the standout moments of the project was an Amapiano version of “Hankipanki,” included in the deluxe edition of the album. The release exceeded expectations, receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews—with one minor exception. “The only ‘bad’ review I got was me saying ‘mendulla oblongata’ instead of’medulla’ he laughs.
The album’s success was underscored by five award nominations, an impressive feat for his debut full-length project. “That’s something,” he says.
Looking Ahead: New Album and a cosmic dream
As he prepares for his next album release in April, Blakk remains focused on crafting music that spreads peace, love, and kindness. However, his ambitions extend far beyond Earth. “The world is too small now—we’re going for the universe,” he says. His ultimate dream? To have NASA broadcast his voice singing a song to the farthest corners of space.
With nearly two decades in music and a growing catalogue of heartfelt, soulful compositions, Josh Blakk is just getting started.
