Renowned Ghanaian actress and outgoing Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante has revealed why she chose and recommended Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui as the main Ghanaian lead in the much anticipated film Anikulapo, directed by Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan.
In a recent Instagram post, Asante recounted the selection process, highlighting Makafui’s dedication and commitment to the role.
“Many have asked me, why Fella? I asked her, ‘Are you sure you can learn Yoruba?’ and she responded, ‘Yes Ma… I promise you, I will do my best… I will make you proud,’” she wrote.
According to Asante, Makafui proved she was the right choice during the first script reading, where she joined the cast online from Ghana and insisted on speaking Yoruba. Her determination impressed the team, including Afolayan himself.
“What was most touching to everyone was the effort she put in, and at the end, I got a call… Kunle said, ‘Juliet, I think we made the absolute best choice,’” she revealed.
Beyond language, Asante praised Makafui’s professionalism and work ethic on set, emphasizing her punctuality, adaptability, and willingness to learn. She also shared a humorous moment where Makafui, startled awake from a nap, instinctively responded in Yoruba, demonstrating how immersed she was in her role.
“She was good-natured on set, was the fun of the party, learned her lines, studied, and did proper characterization. When she had to speak Fante, she wasn’t shy to pester me until she got it right… She mixed well and didn’t show any airs,” Asante wrote.
Reflecting on the broader impact of international productions in Ghana, Asante urged Ghanaian actors to seize such opportunities and leave a lasting impression.
“As more productions come to Ghana, I do hope that when anyone gets the opportunity, they will indeed do their homework and leave a good impression of Ghana and themselves. Film is hard work… do the work,” she advised.
She further expressed gratitude to Kunle Afolayan, the cast and crew, and everyone who contributed to the production in Ghana.
