In a candid and revealing interview on The Breakfast Club, dancehall icon Vybz Kartel stunned fans and listeners by disclosing how he managed to maintain his prolific music output while incarcerated.
Appearing on the popular morning show, the self-styled “World Boss” was asked by DJ Envy about longstanding rumours of a recording studio behind bars.
“You know, you put out so much music, people assumed that you had a studio in prison,” Envy remarked. “Because it just… the music didn’t sound old, it always felt new, it always felt fresh.”
Kartel chuckled at the assumption before delivering the unexpected truth:
“No, I had a phone the iPhone 5S that’s what recorded like the Fever album. The Viking album, yeah.”
The revelation drew astonishment from the hosts, as Kartel went on to detail the makeshift conditions under which his chart-topping songs were made.
“Yeah man, 5S, and a mattress, and some prisoners looking out. That was it. That was it, man. And determination—and God himself.”
Kartel, who has been behind bars since 2011 on a murder conviction, has continued to dominate dancehall charts with a consistent stream of new music. His sound has remained so current that fans frequently speculated about access to professional equipment within prison walls.
This rare interview has now put those rumours to rest, highlighting the artist’s ingenuity, resilience, and relentless work ethic.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Vybz Kartel’s influence on the genre remains strongly unshaken, and his story is yet another chapter in what many consider to be a legendary career.
