Globe Productions, led by Latif Abubakar, in partnership with the Republic of Korea, has launched ‘Sim MaJorley’, a Ghanaian adaptation of the classic Korean novel ‘Sim Cheong.’

The play, reimagined with Ghanaian cultural elements, will be a highlight of the Korean Cultural Festival, with performances scheduled for August 9, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Center (4 p.m. and 8 p.m.) .

Sim MaJorley tells the story of  a devoted daughter who sacrifices herself to the sea gods to restore her blind father’s sight, navigating poverty, societal expectations, and spiritual trials.

At the launch on Wednesday July 9, Latif Abubakar emphasised Globe production’s role in fostering cross-cultural understanding:

“By placing the story within the cultural rhythms, language, and symbolism of the Korean people, we have preserved the essence of the Korean original while creating a platform for creative fusion and mutual appreciation.”

Korean Ambassador to Ghana, Park Kyongsig highlighted the broader Korean Cultural Festival, which includes events on August 2 at the Tema Korean Sports Complex and August 9 in Accra.

The festival will feature K-pop dance performances by Ghanaian youth, Korean culture and product booths, and this unique theatrical collaboration with Globe Productions, known for its dynamic, socially relevant performances.

“This production represents a meaningful cultural collaboration between Korea and Ghana, bringing together the heritage of both nations on a single stage,” Park said, noting the festival’s aim to make Korean culture accessible beyond the capital and strengthen bilateral ties.

The events promise a vibrant celebration of friendship, creativity, and cultural exchange, inviting Ghanaians  to experience Korean heritage through a Ghanaian lens.
