Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has reacted to the growing trend of rappers turning to singing, suggesting that those who abandon rap may simply have found it too demanding or unprofitable.
In an exclusive interview with Ghana Weekend, the “5th August” rapper said he has no problem with musicians experimenting with melodies, but questioned full switches away from hip-hop.
“I don’t have a problem with people singing. But if they switch fully to another genre, probably the first one they were doing wasn’t favouring them,” he said.
Lyrical Joe, who prides himself on staying true to rap, stressed that he has always embraced versatility without losing his lyrical edge.
“You can go and listen to my I Am album. I’ve always done my choruses and singing parts myself. I’m standing on Venus,” he noted with a smile.
He described rap as one of the toughest crafts to master, likening it to a technical subject in school.
“Rap is complicated , it’s like the elective maths of music. That’s where people have problems,” he explained.
The rapper’s remarks come at a time when several Ghanaian hip-hop artists are blending rap with Afrobeats or switching entirely to singing to stay commercially relevant.
