A quiet afternoon turned deadly: The Point Loma shooting story

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, just before 4:00 p.m., the peaceful rhythm of a late summer afternoon in Point Loma, California was shattered on Zola Street — a residential block not far from Point Loma High School. What began earlier that day as a minor household task would escalate into one of the most tragic family disputes the neighbourhood had seen in years.

For more than a decade, William Bushey, then 61, had lived quietly with his elderly mother, June Bushey. On that August afternoon, the family made a small domestic adjustment — the home’s Wi-Fi router was moved from William’s bedroom into June’s room, temporarily disconnecting the internet while technicians completed the task.

Hours later, around 3:50 p.m., William emerged from the house with a shotgun. Without warning, he fired multiple shots in the backyard patio. His sister, 61-year-old Laurie Robinson, who had recently moved into the home following a separation from her husband, was struck down where she stood.

Moments after that first blast, Brett Robinson, 33 and Laurie’s son, had rushed back into the kitchen — alarmed, perhaps, by a text he’d sent earlier warning friends that his uncle was acting “extra sketchy.” It was there that he was also hit by gunfire.

In the ensuing chaos, June Bushey, then 86, fled through the front door, desperately trying to escape the violence. She was shot in the chest and suffered the loss of three fingers amid her frantic dash from the scene, leaving a trail of blood on the front lawn.

Neighbours who heard the shots called emergency services. Instead of barricading himself inside, William did something that stunned first responders: he walked to the front steps, sat down, raised his hands, and waited. Within minutes, police arrived and took him into custody.

Paramedics pronounced both Laurie and Brett dead at the scene. Their sudden deaths sent shockwaves through the close-knit community. June was rushed to hospital in critical condition but survived.

When officers reviewed the frantic 911 audio later, William could be heard confessing his actions to a dispatcher — a rare and haunting moment of clarity amid the brutality of the afternoon.

By January 12, 2026, the case had advanced to formal court proceedings. Prosecutors portrayed the internet disconnection and relocation of the Wi-Fi as the spark in a tinderbox of simmering family tensions. Défence attorneys, meanwhile, argued William had been pushed to a breaking point by perceived threats to his place in the family home.
