Ghanaian musician EL has spoken about the challenges facing the Azonto genre, asserting that the wave of individuals claiming ownership of the sound ultimately hindered its growth and evolution.
During an interview on Metro TV’s Entertainment Review with Nana Yaa, on Monday February 23, EL explained how the competitive nature surrounding the genre created limitations for innovation.
According to him when too many people try to stake a claim over a cultural sound, it can prevent artistes from experimenting and taking the genre in new directions.
“The ownership of the Azonto genre killed the sound,” he said, emphasising that disputes over who “owned” Azonto curtailed the creativity and freedom that initially propelled it to global recognition.
EL’s reflections shed light on the broader challenges of musical innovation in Ghana, where popular genres can quickly become politicized or commercialized, sometimes at the expense of artistic evolution.
