Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has opened up about the inspiration behind his songwriting, revealing how personal experiences and creativity work hand in hand in shaping his music.
The rapper made this known during an interview with Godwin Namboh on Thursday, February 26, on TV3’s Afternoon Show.
When asked whether his music is driven more by creativity or lived experiences, Lyrical Joe explained that his approach changes depending on the type of project he is working on.
“Normally, when you listen to my albums, I come from a place of experience,” he said. “When I’m on an album mode, I get deep and personal with it.”
He noted that albums give him the space to reflect and tell real stories drawn from his life, allowing listeners to connect with his emotions on a deeper level.
However, the rapper clarified that not every song demands that level of emotional depth. According to him, collaborations and feature appearances often require a lighter, more creative approach.
“When I’m getting featured by people and the song is just a song where we just need to rap, you just form words,” he explained. “You put words together and make it look beautiful for the people.”
Lyrical Joe added that music does not always have to be overly intense or analytical. “It’s not always—you don’t always have to get so critical,” he said, emphasising the importance of balance in artistry.
Responding to a follow-up question about the inspiration behind his latest project, Ogya, the rapper made it clear that the album draws from both sides of his creative process.
“Ogya is personal and creative,” he stated, before summing it up simply: “Everything mixed together.”
The interview gave fans rare insight into Lyrical Joe’s mindset as an artist, highlighting how he seamlessly blends real-life experiences with imagination, an approach that continues to define his sound and set him apart in the music scene.
