Organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have introduced a new policy called the Swing Period aimed at ensuring songs released late in the year are not disadvantaged during the awards selection process.
In a statement released on Monday, March 16, Charterhouse explained that the policy will take effect from the 27th edition of the awards and is designed to give December releases a fair chance at recognition.
According to the TGMA Board, songs released late in the year often struggle to gain enough traction before nomination deadlines. The newly introduced Swing Period will allow songs released in December to be considered in the following awards year, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria.
To qualify under the policy, a song must have been released in December of the eligibility year, demonstrated measurable impact within the review year and not have received a nomination in the previous edition of the awards
The board noted that the decision follows three years of engagement with industry stakeholders and reflects the awards’ commitment to adapting to evolving music industry trends.
Under the newly implemented rule, two songs have already secured nominations in the 27th TGMA. The songs include ‘Messiah’ by Sarkodie featuring Kweku Flick and ‘Excellent’ by Kojo Blak featuring Kelvyn Boy
According to the TGMA board, both songs recorded significant audience engagement and traction after their release, illustrating the exact situation the Swing Period policy is intended to address.
