Jamaican reggae musician Gramps Morgan has called on Ghanaians to better appreciate their music icons, singling out Sarkodie as a “special” talent who must be celebrated at home before gaining even greater recognition abroad.
Speaking in an interview with Joy Prime on Tuesday, March 31, Gramps Morgan stressed the need for Ghana to value its artistes while they are still actively contributing to the industry.
“People like Sarkodie, you know, he’s special. Ghana needs to treasure him before it gets to a point where countries like Russia are honouring him,” he said.
The Morgan Heritage member drew comparisons with Jamaica’s music culture, noting how legends such as Bounty Killer are celebrated and respected in their home country.
According to him, Ghana must adopt a similar culture of recognition by honouring its music greats while they are still alive and active.
“Sarkodie is special. Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Samini, Kojo Antwi… these are all special artistes,” he added.
Gramps Morgan also shared a personal experience that deepened his admiration for Ghanaian music, recalling a moment when he performed on the same stage as Kojo Antwi.
“I remember performing with Kojo Antwi on a cruise. To witness a real highlife artiste live was incredible. You hear people like Reggie Rockstone talk about it, but seeing it in real life was something else,” he said.
Beyond praise, the reggae star emphasised his commitment to contributing to Ghana’s growth in music.
He disclosed that he has been involved in initiatives such as the Gramps Morgan Music Clinic, which supports and develops the local industry.
“These things are very prominent in my heart, my soul, and my spirit,” he noted.
